Tips for Moving into your New Rental Property
Moving into a new rental property can be quite an exciting experience. Whether it is for independency from your parents, or a new living quarters for you and your family. Regardless of the reason, there are certain issues that have to be thoroughly checked before you become comfortable in your new homely abode. Although it may be a milestone experience, you cannot overlook the little things that may prohibit you from truly enjoying the “rental life”. Here are a few tips to keep in mind!
- Make sure to inspect the rental property from head to toe- Absolutely EVERYTHING-with the landlord. You want to make the owner aware of all the problems the house currently has. So you are not held liable by any means.
- If something is not noticed on the visit with the landlord, take photos and/or record the damage and make sure to notify the owner IMMEADIATLY. The quicker you say something, the faster the incident disappears and no extra charges will be held against you.
- Check the area surrounding! Look up reviews about the area online, or ask any locals who you may know to give you an idea of the place.
- If you have children and they plan on going to a nearby school, check that area as well. Especially if the planned daily commute is walking, or waiting at the bus stop. There are official government websites available with information on the crime rates and any type of threat in the region.
- Keep up with your financial assets. When it comes to renting you want to be on top of every bill. The less overdue bills you have, the happier the landlord and longer the stay.
- Always check with the landlord before bringing in any animals. Most will say head of time whether animals are permitted, but others may change their mind. If they allow you to keep your pet, make sure to keep the house maintained via no damage to floors, walls, etc. Keep in mind that they still can drop the extra fees necessary to repair anything destroyed while you are living there.
- Call up utilities and request to know the amount previously paid by the owner. Therefore, you will have an idea of how much it will cost, or you can figure out ways to get the costs lower. This will save you much needed money, which means a healthy wallet!
- Maintain the desirable tenant image. Rentals come and go quickly in competitive markets, so to prevent it being swept up from underneath your feet, respect the landlord’s rules and regulations. Also, truly do try to follow the policies on the lease agreement.
- Finally, go back and forth to the region you plan on moving to. Check to see about the recreational activities or the town celebrations that occur. Whether you are an individual or a family, getting involved with the community is a wonderful way to get used to a new area, and become comfortable with your new neighbors.
